The Program

The Objectives

SURO strives to:

Identify motivated individuals and foster leadership skills
Connect up-and-coming talent in the community
Build understanding of the issues facing the global hemophilia community
Help increase treatment standards across the globe

SURO participants will receive:

Coaching in communications and presentation skills
Organizational tools you will need to get your community energized
Training on how to be an advocate with governments and public agencies, medical professionals and companies
Knowledge about the dynamics within the global hemophilia community
Group activities and individual projects, so you can gain hands-on experience
A forum for connecting with young people from other countries who are affected with hemophilia

The Agenda

The program offers two mandatory program meetings held over a six to eight month time period. The initial meeting is held in San Francisco, California, USA and the second is selected to be held somewhere else in the world.

Below is an overview of the typical program agenda:

Part I (fall session):

Building the Foundation of Leadership

Team building skills
Self-esteem activities
Hemophilia 101
History of hemophilia
Understanding the components of the hemophilia community
Communication skills

Interim Project:

During the time between the two SURO conference sessions, participants will focus on an interim project to practice the skills they've developed and encourage collaboration within their local communities. In the second session, participants will have the opportunity to further build their proficiency by discussing their success in implementing the interim project within their own countries and communities.

Part II (winter session):

Defining Your Leadership Role

Development of key leadership skills
Defining strategies and objectives
Making it happen—developing an effective action plan
Public speaking and presentation techniques
Collaborating to identify key issues
"Ask an Expert" discussion on topics relevant to you and other young people with hemophilia
Presentation on individual projects
